The White Debt

The White Debt is Nhalgrin's most beautiful mercy and its most feared chain. It remembers shelter given in lethal cold, food shared under storm, blood defence promised at a door, and rescue offered when the road had already begun to erase footprints. In songs it is compassion with a long memory. In ledgers it becomes labour, warning, daughters sent as surety, soldiers owed, and households bound by decisions their dead made in winter. The doctrine is old enough to feel sacred, and cruel enough to make gratitude resemble possession.
