Its pages record shelter given, rescues owed, food stores shared, blood defence promised, hostages accepted, and debts inherited through households like frost through timber. The book smells of wax, cold leather, lamp smoke, and old hands. To outsiders it looks like accounts. To Nhalgrin it is civilisation's harsh memory, proof that generosity need not become weakness. It is beautiful in its order and dreadful in its reach, because every line may someday ask for a body, a cart, a warning, or a child sent as surety.
