The Starfall Archives

The Starfall Archives preserve dawn-coloured beauty and the worst things done beneath it. Their halls are lined with treaty songs, medical lineages, drowned maps, exile rolls, forbidden war accounts, and the names of children carried out of fallen cities. Lamps burn low to protect vellum. Rain taps the glass roofs like fingers asking to be admitted. Scholars copy atrocities in the same measured hand they use for hymns, because selective memory is how tyrants return wearing cleaner names. The Archives are sanctuary, arsenal, shrine, and future courtroom; their silence has teeth. During war, its reading rooms become map chambers, surgeon schools, and places where commanders learn the names of the people their strategies may abandon. That knowledge is costly; no one leaves the Archives able to pretend ruin is abstract.
