The Smoke Inquests investigate sedition, levy fraud, military failure, forbidden rites, provincial disobedience, and the private rot that command cannot admit it created. Hearings are held under hanging censers so every confession is said to rise visibly before the realm. The rooms smell of smoke, bitter resin, wax tablets, sweat, and fear kept too long indoors. Their verdicts make examples, yet their records reveal how deeply Drazakar depends on suspicion to remain coherent. They are law, theatre, archive, and knife in the same hand. Their oldest warrants are copied beside founding decrees, because Drazakar learned generations ago that command survives only when suspicion is given ritual, office, and record.
