The Noon Cup Rite
Also known as Cup Under the Open Sun.
Lore
The Noon Cup Rite renews guest-right, road pacts, and house vows through shared drink taken in direct daylight. Hosts salt the cup before guests touch it, admitting that welcome has a cost and betrayal has a taste. The rite is old, warm, theatrical, and sometimes terrifying. It smells of salt, fermented mare's milk, bronze, sun-warmed cloth, and dust on hands lifted before witnesses. A cup may make peace, mark debt, or announce that a breach is now public. In Surayan, kindness prefers witnesses.
