Ugthar Chainmaster believes morale is a story officers tell when they have misplaced the keys. His columns move with terrible speed because pain keeps time, chains do not argue, and a hungry guard can be made punctual with the right promise. Ordran recognises the logistical horror: schedules kept, roads used, arrivals achieved, all with the conscience cut out and replaced by iron links. The harsher warbands recognise the simpler truth that captives, beasts, and frightened soldiers can all be driven if someone is willing to spend them. Ugthar smells of rust, sweat trapped under collars, damp straw, lamp oil, and blood dried where metal rubs skin. He gets armies there sooner than mercy would permit, and calls the difference command.
