The Wardstone Vigil

Also known as Vigil of the Guarded Road.

Lore

The Wardstone Vigil is held when the roads must be remembered before winter or war takes them. Towns repair markers, scrape lichen from carved obligations, light watchfires, test patrol bells, stack food caches, and name the dead who vanished between milestones. The rite feels sacred because the road has become sacred through use, grief, and fear. Children carry oil and chalk. Old soldiers stand beside bridge crews. Priests speak, but so do quartermasters and rangers. A wardstone is only stone until someone keeps the promise carved on it; the Vigil makes that promise public again.
