The Wardstone Map
Also known as Map of the Guarded Miles.
Lore
The Wardstone Map is a living wound drawn in ash, chalk, ink, and knife cuts. It records roads, shelters, bell posts, ford duties, broken bridges, and stretches where the Compact has failed. Ranger captains bend over it by lamplight with mud still drying on their boots. A fresh mark may mean a patrol survived, a village vanished, a bridge froze, or a toll lord lied. Outsiders see territory. Marchers see promises kept, deferred, or betrayed. The map is beautiful only to those who understand that every guarded mile was bought with hunger, labour, and blood. Some of its oldest lines were copied from memory after the original roads vanished under forest, plague, or war. A road drawn there is never just geography; it is an inherited oath that may demand new blood from people not yet born when the mark was made.
