The Salt Tribute

The Salt Tribute gathers salt, remounts, grain, river tolls, saddle craft, escort service, ransom shares, repair labour, and diplomatic gifts owed to the shared roads. Its ledgers smell of salt dust, wax, leather, sun-warmed ink, and old quarrels. It funds border patrols and keeps envoys moving, but also reveals which houses are rich, proud, or quietly failing. Selai Namar's predecessors learned generations ago that loyalty rides badly when unpaid. In Surayan, tribute is never only payment. It is a map of honour, hunger, and future betrayal.
