The Oathbell of Asterhold

The Oathbell of Asterhold hangs above the public court, blackened by age, greened at the rim by old weather, and touched only after witnesses have named themselves. Its bronze is cracked near the crown, and when it sounds the note is not beautiful. It is deep, flawed, and long enough to make the crowd hear its own breathing. When the bell rings, stores open, gates unlock, riders muster, and excuses begin to die. Emergency power becomes lawful in that hour, but never innocent. Children are taught that the bell does not bless harsh command; it summons the future to judge it. Every ringing leaves a mark in the Archive, and some families still lower their eyes when old bell-years are spoken aloud.
