The Night of Closed Lamps is Vaelorn's most unforgiven mercy. Pursuers came with war at their backs, and the harbour beacons were extinguished to save Lanthir Quay. Late refugee ships found only black water, enemy sails, and a coast that had chosen silence. The decision preserved the haven and stained the Covenant it preserved. In the Salt Courts, the lamps of that night are still named one by one. Some call it murder by darkness. Some call it the price of keeping any lamp alive at all. No answer has ever stopped the widows from coming. The story is older than many current houses, yet every generation finds itself standing beneath its judgement when a new line of desperate sails appears beyond the breakwater.
