The Greyford Chain

The Greyford Chain can close the crossing beneath Greyford Bastion against armies, flood debris, panic, or uncontrolled retreat. It is maintained as weapon, bridge tool, and moral problem. Lowering it in time can save a city. Raising it too late can become a massacre. Rain beads on its links; rust stains the hands of those who oil it; river mist makes it look almost gentle before the winches begin. Every captain assigned to the chain learns the same dread: protection is sometimes a gate shut in someone's face. The first links were forged after an old flood carried soldiers and children through the same broken span. Its cost is remembered in drills where captains must name the lives a closed crossing may save and the lives it may abandon.
