The First Lantern Rite

Also known as Rite of the First Harbour Lamp.

Lore

The First Lantern Rite begins gently, which is why it breaks so many hearts. A new family stands before the quay while a harbour lamp is lit from the main flame and their names are read into public witness. Children watch the light with wonder. Adults hear the contract inside it. Vaelorn offers bread, berth, medicine, law, and memory; the sheltered owe service, truth, obedience to harbour judgement, and whatever witness their grief can bear. The rite is beautiful because it welcomes the lost. It is solemn because every flame is also a debt. Behind the singers stand clerks, guards, healers, and store officers, because even welcome requires bread, law, medicine, and defence if it is to survive the first hard winter. The first flame is carried in a bronze cup, smelling of lamp oil, wet wool, salt rain, and warm bread from the quay ovens.
