The Cinder Road

The Cinder Road is Ordran's ash-marked artery, cut through woodland, marsh, and stubborn ground so timber, ore, soldiers, orders, surgeons, and refugees can move at the same ruthless pace. Its milestones give distance, water, shelter, and work quotas, because even the road speaks in obligations. In rain it smells of wet ash, pine sap, mud, horse sweat, lamp oil, and hot iron from repair crews. Whoever holds it controls movement, but also appetite. The road feeds the machine; the machine widens the road; the forest remembers what was taken.
