The Ashen Road

The Ashen Road binds Drazakar's citadels, mines, tribute depots, border marches, and execution yards with fortified reliability. Its milestones are also gallows, signal towers, ration marks, and tax posts, so travel becomes a lesson in state reach. Armies love it because grain, blades, surgeons, and orders move without romance. Subject peoples fear it for the same reason. The road smells of ash dust, hot stone, mule sweat, tar, old blood, and iron-shod wheels. It is beautiful in brutal straightness and dreadful because a straight road gives mercy fewer places to hide.
