Maeric Voss keeps the White Archive with the calm of a man who has watched ambition rot under candlelight. He has no army, no ancestral host, and no taste for public triumph, but his hand can find a forgotten oath faster than most captains can draw steel. His robes smell faintly of vellum and lamp oil. His voice is soft enough that petitioners lean forward, which is often when he ruins them. Maeric believes memory is a form of defence. Walls hold back enemies for a season; records hold back lies for generations. In Caerdun, that makes him both servant and executioner, because every truth he preserves may become the sentence that breaks a house, condemns a captain, or denies a grieving mother the comfort of a cleaner story.
