Haldren Thornwatch

Haldren Thornwatch is polite only where politeness will not get refugees killed. At the border he speaks in cut branches, shifted stones, bird silence, and arrows placed where a trespasser can still choose wisdom. Lysvar trusts him because he understands mercy as sequence: warning, measure, refusal, then the final language for those who mistake beauty for permission. His patrols smell of wet leaves, bow wax, cold iron, river mist, and the sour fear of men who realise the path behind them has changed. Haldren knows which trees watched old fires and which streams carry footprints badly after rain. He does not fortify the woodland in any manner a map can respect. He lets invaders walk into being understood. By the time they hear the song that means they are surrounded, the border has already judged them.
