Faren Ashwatch learned that victory without restraint becomes another border fire. His scouts admire him because he asks why before he orders blood, and his enemies fear him because he still orders blood when the answer is clear. Caerdun recognises the discipline in that pause: authority must be able to explain itself when smoke thins and names are read aloud. The Varric Marches recognise the rough necessity, for a captain who hesitates forever leaves roads to murderers and claimants with sharper teeth. Faren smells of ash in wool, damp pine, horse sweat, cold iron, and field notes kept dry beneath armour. He turns rough country into a test of judgement, and not everyone survives being judged.
