Eowara Shieldlark was told so often where courage belonged that she learned to carry it elsewhere. She stands in the gap between expectation and need, which is usually where frightened people die first. Caerdun understands the public lesson of her: duty does not become smaller because it arrived from an unexpected hand, and a shield lifted under witness enters the record no matter who bears it. Keldrun understands the moving flame in her, the rider's truth that rescue belongs to whoever reaches the ford before the water takes the last cart. Eowara smells of wet wool, iron buckles, horse foam, bruised grass, and rain on numbered shields. She does not ask permission to be necessary. She arrives, and necessity changes shape around her.
