Borrik Nhal commands the Gatemarked along the Cinderdeep Road, where excuses echo too long and mercy can give an enemy time to learn the dark. He is admired by wardens and feared by clan sons because his authority begins exactly where private rank usually hides. His armour is scratched by stone; his hands smell of lamp oil, chalk, and old blood in iron links. Borrik believes hesitation belongs above ground. His moral cost is severe: every quick order may prevent invasion, or bury a human plea before it finishes speaking.
