Vargul Blackcrown

Vargul Blackcrown is the answer whispered by soldiers who fear that command may outlive the body that first claimed it. He does not need love, and therefore cannot be negotiated with by the usual human currencies. Drazakar understands the black grandeur of him: rule as fear made ceremonial, banners lowered not from loyalty but from the knowledge that refusal will be recorded in bone. The night-bound courts understand the deeper dread, the way a crown can become less an object than a hunger for kneeling things. Vargul smells of cold iron, extinguished incense, grave damp, black wax, and cloth stored too long in sealed chambers. Near him, every banner must prove it is more than fabric before his shadow counts it as prey.
