Denovar Blackledger can feed a city under siege, count the arrows, name the traitor, and still forget that people are not columns of numbers. Caerdun needs men like him because famine, panic, and war all become deadlier when nobody dares open the account book. He knows which granary seal can break, which road can bear carts in rain, which physician is lying about bandage stores, and which noble's private cellar will save a ward if seized before dawn. He also carries the realm's most intimate danger: necessity becoming permission. Denovar smells of lamp soot, wax seals, mouldering grain, wet wool, and ink dried beside casualty lists.
