Brindlethorn

Brindlethorn is dismissed by court soldiers until the trees begin answering him. He knows the habits of wounded animals, poisoned streams, frightened scouts, and armies that mistake quiet ground for empty ground. Lysvar's hidden discipline clings to him: the path that opens for the hunted, closes behind the cruel, and keeps its own counsel under wet leaves. Vaelorn finds use in the same patience, for sanctuary often begins far from the harbour, with a guide who can bring the lost to bread and lamps before pursuit learns their names. Brindlethorn's passage smells of moss, bark sap, river mud, crushed fern, and poultices warmed in the palm. He does not hurry the living world. He asks it where mercy can pass without becoming betrayal.
