Boran Shieldmere

Boran Shieldmere is loved by soldiers because he goes first and feared by clerks because he believes courage should be enough. He can hold a broken gate with half a company, a bleeding arm, and a voice hoarse from telling younger men exactly where to stand. Caerdun needs such figures and distrusts them for the same reason. A realm of ledgers, beacons, and later audits knows that bravery can save a district before procedure has found its boots, but it also knows that a strong shield tempts everyone to hide a little too much behind it. Boran smells of rain on iron, torn leather, road mud, and hot breath inside a helm. His nobility is real. So is the danger that he will spend himself before anyone has counted what his survival was meant to protect.
