Barun Hearthward brings masons to a battlefield because he intends life to continue after the shouting ends. He measures victory in kitchens relit, storehouses inventoried, wounded workers sheltered, and watch posts raised before dusk. Dovarim sees in him the old Hearth-Stone truth: a home is not inherited once, but repaired until it becomes worthy of the next generation. The Varric Marches see the slower miracle of reclamation, the stubborn work by which a ruined keep becomes a road refuge and a frightened camp becomes a lawful town. Barun's expeditions smell of lime dust, stew smoke, wet wool, split timber, and iron nails warmed in a palm before use. He is not gentle because he avoids war. He is gentle because he insists war must answer to what survives it.
